Tampa Man Sentenced for Passing Counterfeit Cash
Brett Lawrence Rozenburgh, a 55-year-old Tampa man, has been sentenced to 13 months in federal prison for passing counterfeit Federal Reserve notes. Rozenburgh was also ordered to pay restitution to the victims he defrauded.
The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Brian J. Davis on January 16, 2020, the same day Rozenburgh pleaded guilty to the charges.
According to court documents, Rozenburgh was part of a group of individuals passing counterfeit Federal Reserve notes throughout Florida. The group would travel to various shopping centers, passing off $100 bills as legitimate currency.
On March 26, 2019, law enforcement officers stopped a vehicle that Rozenburgh and his co-defendant, Charles Alexander Coriaty III, were riding in. During a search of the vehicle, officers recovered multiple counterfeit $100 bills and a large amount of merchandise that had been purchased using the counterfeit bills.
Rozenburgh and his co-defendant were not alone in their scheme. Coriaty, a 27-year-old from New Port Richey, was sentenced to 16 months in federal prison for his part in the scheme on February 24, 2020.
The case was investigated by the United States Secret Service’s Jacksonville Field Office and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Frein.
Rozenburgh’s sentence is the latest in a series of convictions related to the passing of counterfeit currency in Florida. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of being vigilant when it comes to counterfeit bills.
