Florida scientist sentenced

Tampa, Florida – A scientist has been sentenced to three years in federal prison for defrauding NASA, the U.S. Navy, and the Missile Defense Agency of over $1 million in government funds.

A federal jury found Akbar Fard, 54, formerly of Tampa, guilty of wire fraud in February 2018. U.S. District Judge Virginia Hernandez Covington handed down the sentence, which also includes a forfeiture of $1,472,082 – the amount Fard diverted for personal use.

Fard’s scheme involved the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, which are designed to fund research and development of critical technologies for NASA and the military. He used the funds to finance an international vacation, purchase a car, and fund his retirement among other personal expenses.

The case was investigated by NASA’s Office of the Inspector General, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Thomas N. Palermo.

During the trial, it was revealed that Fard had used the funds to buy retail items and groceries, further highlighting the extent of his deception. The funds were meant to be used for research related to spacecraft, satellites, and the protection of naval assets from fires.
