A Moorland, Iowa man has been sentenced to federal prison for his involvement in multiple incidents of firearm possession. Tanner Lowe, 28, was sentenced to 77 months in prison and a 3-year term of supervised release after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon.
According to court documents, Lowe was previously convicted of intimidation with a dangerous weapon and dominion/control of firearm/offensive weapon in the Iowa District Court for Webster County. He was prohibited from legally possessing a gun due to this prior conviction.
On December 12, 2018, a search warrant was executed at Lowe’s residence, where law enforcement officers found a 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun that was later determined to be stolen. The shotgun had an obliterated serial number, and Lowe was using controlled substances at the time, which further prohibited him from possessing guns.
The incident occurred during a dispute with another individual, and Lowe threatened the person with a shotgun. This separate incident took place on July 31, 2017.
Lowe was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand. He is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mikala Steenholdt and investigated by the Fort Dodge Police Department, Webster County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The case file number is 19-3016, and court file information can be found at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl. The public can follow the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa on Twitter @USAO_NDIA.
This sentence serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of firearm possession by felons. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, along with local law enforcement agencies, will continue to work together to prevent and investigate such crimes.
