Raleigh Woman Pleads Guilty to Healthcare Fraud Scheme
A Raleigh woman has pleaded guilty to a multi-million dollar healthcare fraud scheme, according to a guilty plea accepted by U.S. District Judge Terrence W. Boyle.
Tanya Parrish Grant, 51, of Raleigh, was charged with a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1347, which carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
Grant, who controlled two companies – Carolina Rehab Products, Inc. (CRP) and Blue File DME, LLC (Blue File) – was accused of causing her companies to bill Medicare for more than $50 million between 2014 and 2021. Medicare paid Grant more than $17 million, which she used to purchase luxury items, including a home, a townhome, a Porsche, and several Land Rovers, as well as amass over a million dollars in cash and investments.
The investigation, conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, revealed that Grant paid companies in India and Pakistan to provide her with lists of Medicare patient names and identifying information. She then billed Medicare for durable medical equipment (DME) that she purportedly supplied to the patients, often without written physician orders or shipping products.
In some cases, Grant billed Medicare for equipment in the names of deceased individuals. When audited by Medicare contractors, Grant would forge physician orders if no such order existed in her files to support her billings.
The scheme was halted in 2021 when Grant’s home and offices were searched, and her assets were seized as forfeitable property. Grant faces a maximum of up to 10 years in prison when sentenced later this year.
