A chilling incident in St. Francis, South Dakota, has come to a close with the sentencing of Tanyan Wakita Iron, a/k/a Sonny Iron, for Voluntary Manslaughter.
On August 9, 2020, Iron shot a victim in the head after she declined to join him in a game of ‘Russian roulette’ at her home. The victim sadly succumbed to her injuries.
Iron, 20, was arrested and later indicted by a federal grand jury on September 9, 2020.
On May 27, 2022, Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange, U.S. District Court, handed down a 84-month prison sentence for Iron, along with three years of supervised release and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
This case was investigated by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case, and Iron was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
Iron’s actions are a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of violent crime. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, an evidence-based program aimed at reducing violent crime through partnerships between law enforcement and local prevention and reentry programs.
