Tax Cheat Sentenced to 5 Years Probation

Buffalo, N.Y. – In a shocking case of tax evasion, Jay Chapman, a 47-year-old Spencerport resident, has been sentenced to five years of probation for filing a false income tax return.

Chapman’s troubles with the law began in 2007 when he failed to report business income totaling $118,971 on his personal income tax return. This egregious error has now landed him in hot water, as he must pay restitution totaling $111,078.

U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced the sentencing, which was handed down by U.S. District Judge David G. Larimer. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Bradley E. Tyler.

The Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Division, led by Shantelle P. Kitchen, Acting Special Agent in Charge, New York Field Office, conducted a thorough investigation into Chapman’s activities, ultimately leading to his conviction.

The sentencing of Chapman serves as a stern warning to those who would attempt to cheat the system. ‘We will not tolerate tax evasion in this country,’ said Attorney Hochul in a statement. ‘Those who break the law will be held accountable.’

Chapman’s case is a stark reminder that tax evasion is a serious offense, punishable by law. As he begins his five-year probationary period, Chapman will have ample time to reflect on the consequences of his actions. And as he pays off the $111,078 in restitution, he will be a stark reminder to others that tax evasion will not be tolerated.
