GREENSBORO, NC — The Justice Department has served justice on former Internal Revenue Service (IRS) revenue officer Lucian Baird, sentencing him to 43 months in prison for tax evasion and corruptly endeavoring to impede the due administration of internal revenue laws. Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg and Acting U.S. Attorney Sandra J. Hairston announced the verdict.
Records reveal that from 1989 to 2014, Baird operated HL Baird’s Tax Consultants while avoiding taxes since at least 1998. With his IRS background, he concealed hundreds of thousands in earnings from his consulting business in his children’s names. He also submitted a false collection form to the IRS and attempted to withdraw funds before seizure.
Despite owing taxes, Baird continued paying personal luxuries like his mortgage, timeshare fees, and car payments. His corrupt actions extended to using his stepson’s identity to apply for a Preparer Tax Identification Number and filing over 900 tax returns under false pretenses.
“For well over a decade, Lucian Baird exploited his IRS experience to dodge taxes and revel in personal luxury,” Goldberg stated. “The government requires everyone to pay their fair share, and efforts like Baird’s will be met with severe consequences.”
Acting U.S. Attorney Hairston echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that “Baird’s fraudulent scheme was designed solely to evade tax payments due to the federal government.” IRS Criminal Investigation Chief Richard Weber added that “It doesn’t matter who you are; we uncover fraud schemes and bring justice to those who evade their tax obligations.”
