Hard-hitting news: Josiah Larkin, the Bayview/Hunter’s Point tax shop owner, has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for his role in a massive tax fraud scheme. The United States Attorney Brian J. Stretch and IRS Criminal Investigation Assistant Special Agent in Charge Tyrone W. Blanchette announced the sentence today, following a trial that concluded in September 2016.
Evidence against Larkin, 40, revealed he operated an unauthorized franchise, Colbert Ball Tax, on Third Street. The defendant’s deceitful scheme began just ten days before Christmas in 2012 with the promise of “Get Up to $600- Even if Unemployed, On SSA or SSI.” He骗取了无收入的纳税人通过虚假的教育支出申报高达1000美元的税退款，将其中一半据为己有。
“Today’s sentence should serve as a stern warning to tax cheats,” Stretch declared. “Larkin exploited the vulnerable with his storefront, misleading them into believing he was a legitimate business operator.”
Assistant Special Agent Blanchette echoed Stretch’s sentiment: “Despite his neon sign, Larkin targeted those in need of financial help just before Christmas. The IRS Criminal Investigation unit will continue to crack down on such fraudulent activities.”
In addition to the prison term and restitution, Judge Susan Illston ordered three years of supervised release for Larkin. He is set to begin serving his sentence on April 28, 2017.
The investigation was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Cynthia Stier and Laurie Kloster Gray prosecuting the case.
