Pensacola Tax Preparer Jailed for Filing Fake Returns

Justin T. Phan, 51, of Pensacola, has been found guilty of filing false tax returns, a crime that has left taxpayers stunned. A four-day bench trial brought to light the extent of Phan’s deceit, where he deliberately falsified tax returns for himself for tax years 2008, 2009, and 2010.

Phan, the owner of Global Travel and Tours on Mobile Highway in Pensacola, prepared income tax returns for individuals in the local Vietnamese community. His business also involved selling airline tickets, preparing immigration documents, and transferring money outside the United States for his customers.

According to the government’s evidence, Phan falsely claimed his total income for the respective years was $14,317, $23,948, and $23,649. However, it was proven that Phan’s total income for each of the years was in excess of $100,000. As a result, he kept from paying in excess of $100,000 in taxes.

The charges against Phan are the result of an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Tiffany H. Eggers.

Chief U.S. District Court Judge M. Casey Rodgers has scheduled the sentencing for August 19, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida is handling the case.

Phan’s actions have left a trail of deceit and financial loss for the community. His conviction serves as a reminder of the importance of honesty and integrity in business and personal dealings.
