SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Donald R. Felton, 37, of Taylorville, Illinois, is headed to federal prison for two decades. Felton was sentenced on February 7, 2023, to 20 years behind bars for possession with intent to distribute a staggering 398 grams – nearly a pound – of pure methamphetamine, commonly known as “Ice.” The sentence sends a clear message: moving serious quantities of this poison will not be tolerated.
The investigation, launched in May 2019, revealed Felton was a regular commuter to the St. Louis area, allegedly sourcing the deadly drug for redistribution within Taylorville. Law enforcement caught him red-handed on June 8, 2019, observing him meet with an unidentified individual at a rest area near Hamel, Illinois. A subsequent traffic stop and search of Felton’s SUV yielded the massive methamphetamine haul, along with a digital scale used for weighing the drug and over $800 in cash – the profits of his illicit trade.
Chief U.S. District Judge Sara Darrow didn’t pull any punches at the sentencing hearing. She went above the mandatory minimum of 15 years, citing the “devastating impacts” methamphetamine has had on communities across Central Illinois. Darrow also highlighted Felton’s extensive criminal history, dating back to 1996 when he was just 11 years old – a career criminal with a pattern of disregard for the law.
Felton was indicted in June 2019 and finally brought to justice after a two-day jury trial concluded in June 2022. The evidence clearly pointed to his guilt, and the jury wasn’t buying any excuses. The statutory penalties for this offense are brutal: a minimum of 15 years and up to life in prison, a potential $20,000,000 fine, and a minimum of 10 years of supervised release after serving his time.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy A. Bass made it clear this case is part of a larger effort. “This case represents the Department’s continuing commitment to holding persons accountable for the distribution of Ice methamphetamine and, as Judge Darrow noted, its devastating impact on communities in Central Illinois,” Bass stated. He also praised the collaborative work of multiple agencies.
The successful prosecution was a team effort, involving the Illinois State Police Central Illinois Enforcement Group, Christian County Sheriff’s Office, Taylorville Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Bass and Sierra Senor-Moore skillfully presented the case and secured the lengthy sentence. Felton’s time peddling poison is over, and Central Illinois is a little safer because of it.
