PEORIA, Ill. – Gabriel Antonio Montano-Rodriguez, 41, is facing a long stretch behind bars after receiving a 324-month federal prison sentence for flooding Central Illinois with ice methamphetamine and heroin. The sentence, handed down January 13, 2023, by U.S. District Judge James E. Shadid, reflects the scale of Montano-Rodriguez’s operation and his blatant disregard for the law.
Federal prosecutors laid out a damning case, revealing that Montano-Rodriguez, an illegal immigrant, sourced methamphetamine directly from Mexico. Operating primarily out of Arizona, he acted as a key link in the supply chain, funneling both meth and heroin across the southwest border and into the heart of Illinois. On a single trip, authorities discovered he transported a staggering fifteen pounds of ice methamphetamine destined for the Peoria area. The total haul, conservatively estimated, exceeded 23 pounds of meth and 6 pounds of heroin over a ten-month period.
Judge Shadid didn’t pull punches. He explicitly noted Montano-Rodriguez’s “life of crime,” citing prior federal convictions for marijuana conspiracy, illegal reentry into the United States, and the transportation of undocumented immigrants. The judge emphasized that Montano-Rodriguez had been deported at least four times and voluntarily removed on other occasions, only to repeatedly return and continue his criminal activities. Shadid stated the lengthy sentence was necessary, as previous deportation attempts had failed to keep Montano-Rodriguez “from the streets of the United States.”
Montano-Rodriguez didn’t operate alone. Three of his Peoria-area drug dealers are already in federal prison, and another is serving time in the Illinois Department of Corrections. This case highlights the network of local players who facilitate the distribution of these dangerous drugs, turning a profit off the misery of others. The DEA and Pekin Police Department worked together to dismantle this operation, showcasing the power of interagency cooperation.
“The Pekin Police Department’s partnership with the DEA unleashes a host of resources that allows our team of experienced, dedicated, sharp-shooting detectives to work on cases like these,” said Pekin Police Chief John Dossey. “Montano-Rodriguez could have landed anywhere in the United States to deal drugs—and to the immense credit of the case agent who tirelessly pursued him—this sentence makes clear that Montano-Rodriguez should have chosen elsewhere. Our Department’s focus and decades-long legacy to keep communities safe by disrupting drug dealers at the top of the food chain will continue.”
Todd Smith, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the DEA – Springfield, added, “The DEA, alongside our state and local partners, have an unwavering commitment to protect Americans by tenaciously pursuing those who are responsible for the trafficking and distribution of methamphetamine in our community.” Montano-Rodriguez was originally indicted in September 2021 and arrested in November 2021 while serving a sentence for a marijuana conspiracy in Texas. He’s been in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service since. The charges of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute carry a potential sentence of 10 years to life, with enhancements for prior convictions. Montano-Rodriguez will also face five years of supervised release after completing his 27-year sentence.
