ALBANY, NY – Carlos Hernandez, 53, of Albany, has confessed to flooding the streets with a deadly combination of heroin and fentanyl. The Albany resident pled guilty today to two counts of distribution of a controlled substance, a clear admission of guilt in a case that highlights the ongoing opioid crisis gripping the nation.
According to court documents, Hernandez wasn’t dealing small amounts. Between April and May of 2021, he peddled a staggering 68 grams of pure fentanyl and 71 grams of heroin directly within the city of Albany. That’s enough poison to kill many, and a clear indication of Hernandez’s disregard for human life and the damage he inflicted on the community.
The bust was the result of a determined investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Special Agent in Charge Frank A. Tarentino III and United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman jointly announced the guilty plea, a small victory in a much larger war against drug trafficking. They’ve made it clear they won’t tolerate those who profit from addiction and suffering.
Hernandez now awaits sentencing on June 21, 2023, before Senior United States District Judge Lawrence E. Kahn. While a plea deal may be in play, the potential penalties are severe. Hernandez is facing a maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars, alongside a hefty fine of up to $1 million. Even after prison, he could be subjected to a term of supervised release ranging from three years to life, a constant reminder of his crimes.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin S. Clark is spearheading the prosecution, building a solid case that led to Hernandez’s admission. This case serves as a stark warning to anyone considering entering the drug trade: the DEA and the Department of Justice are actively working to dismantle these operations and bring perpetrators to justice. The streets of Albany are a little safer tonight, but the fight is far from over.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing of Carlos Hernandez. We remain committed to exposing the underbelly of federal crime and holding those responsible accountable for their actions. This isn’t just about statistics; it’s about the lives destroyed by the opioid epidemic and the families left shattered in its wake.
