New Haven Resident TEEJAY JOHNSON Sentenced for Unlawful Possession of Firearm

Teejay Johnson, a 38-year-old New Haven resident, has been sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for unlawfully possessing a firearm. This stems from a search warrant executed at his residence in March 2022 by the New Haven Police Department Shooting Task Force and other law enforcement officers. During the search, Johnson was found to be in possession of a loaded .40 caliber handgun, along with over $8,600 in cash and various narcotics.

Johnson’s criminal history includes state felony convictions for firearm and assault-related offenses. As a result, it is a violation of federal law for him to possess a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce.

According to court documents, Johnson was found coming out of the bathroom after narcotics had been flushed down the toilet. Investigators collected samples of narcotics from the bathroom and found other narcotics, including fentanyl, marijuana, and a loaded handgun with an extended magazine and 16 rounds of ammunition.

Johnson has been detained since his federal arrest on April 21, 2022. He pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon on August 28, 2023. This matter was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the New Haven Police Department.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Anastasia King through Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN). PSN is an evidence-based program that focuses on reducing violent crime in communities. Through this program, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems and develop comprehensive solutions.

Johnson’s sentence also includes three years of supervised release, with the first six months to be served in home detention. His sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal laws regarding firearm possession.
