NEWARK, N.J. — Terrance Bradley, 28, of Newark, is headed to federal prison for 90 months after being sentenced Tuesday for flooding the streets with heroin, crack cocaine, and a deadly fentanyl analogue — all while armed and operating from his Renner Avenue bedroom.
Bradley pleaded guilty to one count of possessing with intent to distribute controlled substances, including heroin, cocaine, and a fentanyl analogue; one count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition; and one count of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. U.S. District Judge Madeline Cox Arleo handed down the sentence, marking a major win in the city’s ongoing battle against violent narcotics networks.
The operation began on December 6, 2018, when Newark Police Department surveillance units observed Bradley conducting a suspected hand-to-hand drug sale near a residence on Renner Avenue. After the exchange, the buyer was apprehended a short distance away, caught red-handed with heroin. That bust set the stage for a full-scale raid the following day.
On December 7, 2018, police executed a search warrant at the residence. Inside Bradley’s bedroom, they uncovered a small-scale drug empire: 3,151 glassine envelopes of heroin, 455 vials of crack cocaine, more than $6,000 in cash, and a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol. Officers also seized over 200 additional rounds of ammunition of various calibers. Bradley later admitted the drugs, firearm, and cash were his.
In addition to the 90-month prison term, Judge Arleo sentenced Bradley to three years of supervised release upon his eventual return to society. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Angelica M. Sinopole of the Organized Crime and Gangs Unit in Newark, part of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey.
The investigation was conducted under the umbrella of the Violent Crime Initiative (VCI), a multi-agency task force launched in August 2017 to target violent offenders in Newark. The VCI includes federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, ATF, DEA, U.S. Marshals, Newark Department of Public Safety, Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, and others. U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito credited the Newark Police Department — under Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose — for their critical role in dismantling Bradley’s operation.
