Terry Melton Jr., a 31-year-old resident of Mansfield, Ohio, has been found guilty of possessing a firearm as a felon. The conviction comes after a two-day trial in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.
According to investigators, on August 14, 2020, law enforcement approached a vehicle and occupant suspected of involvement in drug trafficking in the Mansfield area. Authorities detained the occupant due to an active arrest warrant. Upon searching the vehicle, investigators found a 9mm semiautomatic pistol on the driver-side floorboard. The firearm was loaded, but its serial number had been obliterated.
Melton, a convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to previous convictions of distribution of cocaine and cocaine base, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense. He is scheduled to be sentenced on August 25, 2022.
The maximum possible sentence Melton faces is life imprisonment. The case was investigated by the Mansfield Police Department, Richland County METRICH Drug Unit, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter E. Daly is prosecuting the case.
