NEW ORLEANS, LA – Tevis Stanton, 22, of Orleans Parish, has confessed to federal charges stemming from a violent carjacking last year, the Department of Justice announced Wednesday. Stanton pled guilty to two counts: carjacking and using a firearm during a crime of violence. The brazen daylight robbery occurred on March 22, 2022, in the 1200 block of Fern Street.
According to the indictment, Stanton forcibly stole a vehicle from a victim on Fern Street. The second count details his use of a firearm in the commission of that crime. The feds aren’t messing around – this isn’t some petty theft. This was a calculated, armed takeover of someone’s property, and now Stanton is facing a stiff penalty.
The carjacking charge, a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2119(1), carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison, along with a potential $250,000.00 fine and up to 3 years of supervised release. However, the firearm charge – a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c)(1)(A)(ii) – is the real kicker. That carries a mandatory minimum of 7 years, potentially escalating to a life sentence, to be served consecutive to any other sentence handed down. Another $250,000.00 fine and 5 years of supervised release are also on the table.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans highlighted the case as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN),” a federal initiative designed to combat violent crime and gun violence by coordinating local, state, and federal law enforcement. The program focuses on building trust within communities and targeting enforcement efforts where they’re most needed. It’s the same old song and dance, but in this case, it led to Stanton’s conviction.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) worked together on the investigation. ATF agents likely traced the firearm used in the carjacking, building a solid case against Stanton. Assistant United States Attorney Inga Petrovich of the Violent Crime Unit is prosecuting the case, and she’s clearly aiming for maximum punishment.
Stanton’s sentencing is scheduled for September 27, 2023. He also faces a mandatory $100.00 special assessment fee for each count. Expect a lengthy stay in a federal penitentiary for this one. This case serves as a warning: arming yourself and resorting to violence during a carjacking will land you in federal prison for a very long time.
