NEW ORLEANS, LA – Ronald Taylor, 31, of New Orleans, is facing serious federal charges after being indicted for possessing firearms despite a prior felony conviction. The indictment, unsealed Tuesday, alleges Taylor was found with three firearms and ammunition, putting him in direct violation of federal law.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Taylor is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, specifically violating Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(8). The specifics of the original felony conviction haven’t been released, but the charge itself carries a hefty penalty.
If convicted, Taylor could spend up to 15 years behind bars. Beyond imprisonment, he’s facing a potential fine of up to $250,000, a mandatory $100 special assessment fee, and at least three years of supervised release after serving his time. The wheels of justice are turning, but U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans was quick to point out that an indictment is just the first step.
“This indictment is merely a charge, and the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt,” Evans stated in a press release. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) spearheaded the investigation, bringing the case to the attention of federal prosecutors. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christine Calogero is handling the prosecution.
Federal officials are framing the case as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across the country. The program emphasizes collaboration between law enforcement at all levels and community organizations, focusing on prevention, strategic enforcement, and measurable results. The DOJ launched a renewed focus on PSN in 2021, hoping to stem the tide of gun violence plaguing many American cities.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it moves through the federal court system. The question remains: will the evidence be enough to secure a conviction and keep Taylor, a convicted felon, off the streets and away from firearms? The outcome will undoubtedly send a message about how seriously federal authorities are taking illegal gun possession in the New Orleans area.
