Multiple Firearms Charges Rock Louisiana Community
LAFAYETTE, La. – In a shocking turn of events, Selvin Ponce-Hernandez, a 27-year-old Honduran national, has been indicted on multiple firearms charges in Louisiana. The indictment, which was announced by United States Attorney David C. Joseph, alleges that Ponce-Hernandez illegally re-entered the country, possessed a firearm by a prohibited felon, and possessed a firearm by an illegal alien.
According to the indictment, Ponce-Hernandez was arrested on August 9, 2018 in Lafayette Parish. During the arrest, law enforcement agents discovered that he was from Honduras and had previously been deported. Additionally, they found that he was in possession of a Bersa Thunder .380 Deluxe pistol and ammunition.
A review of Ponce-Hernandez’s criminal record revealed that he was also a convicted felon. This discovery has led to additional charges, including possession of a firearm by a prohibited felon and possession of a firearm by an illegal alien.
Under the indictment, Ponce-Hernandez faces up to 10 years in prison for each of the three counts, a total of 30 years. He also faces three years of supervised release, a $250,000 fine, and possible deportation.
The investigation into Ponce-Hernandez’s activities was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, the ATF, and the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Ayo will be prosecuting the case.
An indictment is merely an accusation, and Ponce-Hernandez is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
