A Texas physician flew into a violent rage midair — and a federal jury held him accountable. William Clark Turner, 53, of Kemp, Texas, was convicted Monday on one count of interference with a flight attendant after a four-day trial in Honolulu. The verdict caps a disturbing incident that put an American Airlines flight on high alert and forced cockpit lockdown.
On March 14, 2016, Turner was aboard American Airlines Flight 128, a non-stop route from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to Maui, when his behavior turned threatening and abusive. Witnesses testified he verbally attacked fellow passengers, creating chaos that diverted a flight attendant from critical duties to contain the outburst. His conduct crossed the line from unruly to criminal.
Federal prosecutors detailed how the crew, fearing for safety, alerted the pilot. In response, the cockpit was sealed in lockdown for the remainder of the flight — a serious protocol reserved for extreme threats. No physical assault occurred, but the psychological toll and operational disruption were enough to trigger a federal investigation.
Turner, a licensed doctor, showed no regard for the confined, high-stakes environment of a commercial aircraft. U.S. Attorney Florence T. Nakakuni emphasized that interfering with crew members during flight is not a minor offense — it jeopardizes every soul on board. “The flight attendant’s ability to do her job was compromised by Turner’s actions,” Nakakuni said.
The jury acquitted Turner on two counts of simple assault, indicating they did not find evidence of physical violence. But the single conviction on interference carries a hammer: up to 20 years in federal prison. Sentencing is set for June 5, 2017, before Senior District Judge Susan Oki Mollway.
The FBI led the investigation, underscoring the seriousness of in-flight threats. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Margaret Nammar and Jill Otake prosecuted the case. As air travel grows more tense nationwide, the Turner case stands as a warning: rage at 30,000 feet is a one-way ticket to federal court.
