Texas Man Charged with Federal Firearms Charges in Officer’s Slaying

HOUSTON – In a shocking turn of events, a 51-year-old El Salvadorian national has been charged in federal court with being a felon and an alien unlawfully in possession of a firearm. Elmer Rolando Manzano, the suspect in the killing of a Houston police officer, was arraigned on federal firearms charges announced U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Patrick.

According to the criminal complaint filed today, Manzano, who resides in Houston but has no legal status in the United States, allegedly fired shots from inside a Southwest Houston condominium after refusing to open the door for law enforcement officers. The officers had been called to the scene by a woman who wanted to retrieve her belongings. The woman’s son had a key to the apartment and was able to gain entry, but Manzano allegedly opened fire, striking one of the officers, who later died at the scene.

The other officer and the woman’s son were also injured in the shooting. Authorities conducted a search of the residence and found two firearms – A Ruger P89, 9mm handgun and a Colt .38 caliber revolver. Manzano allegedly has a felony conviction and is, therefore, prohibited by federal law from possessing a firearm or ammunition. As an alien illegally or unlawfully in the United States, he is also prohibited from such possession.

According to the charges, the woman had allegedly called authorities on Oct. 17 and 18, reporting Manzano had been acting aggressively and been verbally abusive towards her. The complaint further alleges she reported Manzano had a weapon, and she was in fear for her life. If convicted, Manzano faces up to 10 years in federal prison.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations conducted the investigation with the assistance of the Houston Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jill Stotts is prosecuting the case. A criminal complaint is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. A defendant is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law.

The tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers every day. The Grimy Times sends its condolences to the family of the fallen officer and wishes a speedy recovery to the other officer and the woman’s son who were injured in the shooting.

As the investigation continues, one thing is clear – the justice system will not tolerate individuals who break the law and put innocent lives at risk.
