Seven Indicted in Massive Marijuana Operation
HOUSTON, Texas – In a joint operation between law enforcement agencies, seven individuals have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in a massive marijuana grow house operation in the Houston area. The operation, which was headed by Dang Hai Nguyen and his wife, Carry Le, was discovered in August 2011.
The investigation, which was led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, revealed that the operation involved the cultivation and distribution of over 1,754 hydroponically-grown marijuana plants at eight different locations in and around Houston.
Dang Hai Nguyen, 37, and his wife, Carry Le, 40, were sentenced to 120 months in federal prison for their roles in the operation. Nguyen coordinated the overall grow operation, while Le controlled the finances. Son Kim Le, 42, was sentenced to 108 months in federal prison for his role in the operation. Son Kim Le worked in sales and operations.
The other defendants were sentenced as follows: Lam Thanh Ho, 45, was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for conspiracy to maintain a place of manufacturing; Hien The Nguyen, 29, was sentenced to 34 months in federal prison for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance; Tuan Anh Le, 42, was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance; Tuan Anh Nguyen, 46, was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.
The defendants were alleged to have used various methods to conceal their operation, including installing secondary, illegally installed electrical circuit boxes that bypassed the utility company’s meters. They also used high-intensity grow lights and ventilation systems to cultivate the marijuana plants.
The investigation was led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, with assistance from the Houston Police Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The operation was a result of a joint effort between the agencies to dismantle the massive marijuana operation.
Minh Quang Hoang Nguyen, 35, is set to be sentenced on April 8, 2016.
