A Texas woman is facing up to 10 years in prison after 20 pounds of cocaine were seized from her vehicle during a checkpoint inspection in New Mexico.
Aurelia Madrid-Marquez, 51, was driving a minivan with Illinois license plates when she was stopped at the Highway 54 checkpoint south of Alamogordo, New Mexico, on June 16, 2025.
During routine questioning, Border Patrol agents conducted a canine inspection of the vehicle, which resulted in a positive alert for narcotics. A subsequent search revealed seven vacuum-sealed bundles containing a white powdery substance concealed in the driver-side floorboard area.
Field tests confirmed the substance to be cocaine, and Madrid-Marquez was charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration with assistance from the U.S. Border Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Devon Aragon Martinez is prosecuting the case.
Madrid-Marquez will remain in third-party custody pending trial, which has not yet been scheduled. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison.
The charges against Madrid-Marquez are merely an allegation, and she is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
