A jury in Denver, Colorado, has found Theron Maxton, 59, guilty of four counts of influencing a federal officer by threats to the officer and/or the officer’s family member.
The trial, which began on January 20, 2015, and concluded on January 22, 2015, heard allegations that Maxton, an inmate at the Florence Correctional Complex, made threats to assault or murder correctional officers and their families in retaliation for the officers performing their official duties.
According to the Second Superseding Indictment, obtained on May 8, 2014, Maxton allegedly made the threats in letters to the correctional officers directly or through a former cellmate, who was released.
In one instance, Maxton attempted to persuade the former inmate to kill the prison staff members and their families. In December 2012, Maxton also stated directly to an FBI special agent that if given the opportunity, he would try to kill prison staff members.
Maxton faces not more than 10 years, and up to a $250,000 fine, per count, for each of the four counts. He is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Philip A. Brimmer on May 1, 2015.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys David Tonini and Valeria Spencer.
Maxton was housed at the Florence Correctional Complex in the United States Penitentiary and the Federal Correctional Institution at the time he made the threats.
