Pharmacist in Kansas Charged with Stealing Prescription Drugs from Former Employer

A federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging a Kansas pharmacist for allegedly taking prescription drugs from a former employer for his personal use.

According to the indictment, Thomas Edward Thompson, 32, of Overland Park, Kansas, is accused of stealing prescription medications, including fentanyl, oxycodone, and hydrocodone, from his former employer, a pharmacy in Wichita, Kansas.

The indictment alleges that Thompson, a licensed pharmacist, stole the medications between March 2022 and July 2022, resulting in a total loss of over $10,000. The indictment also alleges that Thompson sold some of the stolen medications to others for personal gain.

Thompson was arrested on February 28, 2024, and made his initial appearance in federal court in Wichita, Kansas. He was released on bond pending a trial.

The indictment charges Thompson with one count of theft of a controlled substance, a felony offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

The case is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of the Inspector General, and the Kansas Board of Pharmacy. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Kansas.

The indictment was returned on February 28, 2024, and is pending in the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas.
