Foglia’s Tax Evasion Scheme Unravels
In a stunning display of financial recklessness, Thomas G. Foglia, proprietor of Foli’s Place in North Braddock, Pa., has been sentenced to four years probation, including 12 months of home detention, and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service for income tax evasion, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.
Senior United States District Judge Gustave Diamond imposed the sentence on Foglia, who admitted to keeping two sets of books to understatement his income on tax returns, resulting in a staggering total tax loss of $193,518.00 due to false Forms 1040 filed by Foglia for the years 2005 through 2009.
The scheme, which spanned five years, left a trail of deceit and financial ruin in its wake. Foglia’s actions were a blatant disregard for the law and a slap in the face to honest taxpayers who follow the rules.
Assistant United States Attorney Leo M. Dillon prosecuted this case on behalf of the government, bringing Foglia to justice for his egregious actions.
U.S. Attorney Hickton commended the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation, for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Foglia, stating, ‘Their tireless efforts have ensured that Foglia will be held accountable for his crimes.’
Foglia’s sentence serves as a warning to others who would seek to evade the taxman: the IRS will not be ignored, and those who break the law will be brought to justice.
In a statement, Judge Diamond noted that a non-jail sentence was appropriate due to the relatively small scale of the tax evasion and Foglia’s use of his business to raise money for popular causes.
The case serves as a reminder that tax evasion is a serious offense with severe consequences, and those who engage in such behavior will be held accountable.
