Curtis E. Thompson, Online Child Exploitation, NJ 2023

NEWARK, N.J. – Curtis E. Thompson, 32, of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, will spend the next two decades behind bars after being sentenced today to 240 months in prison for a particularly vile crime: paying a minor to perform sexually explicit acts and broadcasting them online. Acting U.S. Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick didn’t mince words announcing the sentence, a clear message that such predation won’t be tolerated.

Thompson pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge John Michael Vazquez to one count of production of child pornography. The charges stemmed from a complaint filed on November 10, 2015, meaning Thompson has already been cooling his heels in jail for years awaiting justice. Judge Vazquez delivered the sentence in Newark federal court, adding a lifetime of supervised release to the prison term – ensuring Thompson will be monitored even after his release.

Court documents detail a disturbing pattern of grooming and exploitation. From May to September 2015, Thompson used Facebook Messenger and FaceTime to connect with a victim, referred to as “Victim 1,” and their friends. He quickly learned the victim was under 18, yet continued to engage, escalating his behavior to actively encourage sexually explicit activity. The communications weren’t just suggestive; Thompson actively solicited recordings and live streams of the acts.

The truly sickening part? Thompson wasn’t just a passive observer. He paid the victim for their participation, effectively buying and selling exploitation. This wasn’t a fleeting moment of poor judgment; it was a calculated effort to satisfy his depraved desires, turning a vulnerable child into a commodity. The details revealed a cold, predatory scheme meticulously carried out through readily available technology.

The investigation was spearheaded by Special Agents with the FBI, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Timothy Gallagher in Newark. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dark underbelly of online communication and the relentless work of law enforcement to protect the most vulnerable. Assistant U.S. Attorney Svetlana M. Eisenberg, of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Newark, skillfully prosecuted the case, bringing Thompson to justice.

Thompson was represented by David A. Holman Esq., Assistant Federal Public Defender, Newark. While legal representation is guaranteed, the facts of this case speak for themselves. The 20-year sentence, while a significant step, offers little solace to the victim whose life has been irrevocably damaged by Thompson’s actions. This case is a chilling illustration of the dangers lurking in the digital shadows, and a call for increased vigilance in protecting children online.
