TAMPA, FL – Christopher Lee Thompson, 46, of Palmetto, Florida, will spend the next six decades of his life behind bars. U.S. District Judge William Jung handed down a 60-year federal prison sentence today for the production of child sexual abuse material. The sentence comes after Thompson pleaded guilty on March 6, 2024, to the heinous crimes discovered during a disturbing investigation.
The case originated with allegations of sexual battery against a five-year-old child, triggering a residential search warrant. What investigators found was far worse than initially suspected: nearly 20,000 images of child sexual abuse material. But Thompson wasn’t just a collector; he was a creator. Evidence revealed he actively produced his own exploitative content, victimizing multiple children aged 13 years or younger. The court also ordered Thompson to forfeit several items used in the commission of his crimes, including two cellphones, an external hard drive, a box of DVDs, and a 128GB Micro SD Card.
“While it’s heartbreaking to learn of yet another case of innocence lost because of a sexual predator, it’s reassuring to learn of the continued dedication of special agents and our law enforcement partners in making sure this predator spends a long time in prison for his despicable crime,” stated FBI Tampa Division Acting Special Agent in Charge Rodney Crawford. The sentiment, while offering a glimmer of hope, underscores the grim reality of the ongoing fight against child exploitation.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Abigail K. King skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring Thompson faced the full weight of the law. The sheer volume of evidence and the active creation of abuse material undoubtedly contributed to the severity of the sentence.
This prosecution falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice. The program aims to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse by pooling federal, state, and local resources. It’s a grim reminder that predators like Thompson are actively sought out and brought to justice, but the fight is far from over.
