Donald Thompson, 23, of Washington, D.C., has entered a guilty plea for a brazen carjacking in Northeast Washington that left the victim robbed and fearful. According to U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips, Thompson faces seven years in prison after being charged with carjacking, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.
The incident occurred on March 26, 2016, when Thompson and an accomplice targeted the victim outside a rented Dodge Ram truck. The accomplice threatened the victim with a handgun while Thompson stole his iPhone and fled in the stolen vehicle. The victim was robbed of approximately $1,000.
Thompson and his accomplice later attempted to remove a dirt bike from the truck but abandoned their efforts, leaving fingerprints that led to Thompson’s arrest on July 12, 2016. His co-conspirator is currently awaiting trial on charges including conspiracy and armed carjacking.
The plea deal hinges on Court approval and is set for sentencing on March 24, 2017. Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Barker was instrumental in the investigation and prosecution of the case, with praise from U.S. Attorney Phillips for the Metropolitan Police Department’s work on this investigation.
Thompson’s conviction underscores the ongoing efforts to combat carjacking and violent crime in the nation’s capital. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities immediately.
