Thompson Sentenced for Smuggling Dozen Guns into RI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A North Carolina man, Anthony Mondrez Thompson, 43, was today sentenced to eight years in federal prison for trafficking a dozen loaded, high-powered firearms into Rhode Island, announced Acting United States Attorney Richard B. Myrus.

During a traffic stop by Rhode Island State Police on Rte. 95, Thompson was found in possession of the arsenal, including night-vision goggles and a taser. He pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of firearms on November 6, 2020.

Court documents reveal that Thompson attempted to flee following a confrontation with law enforcement, resulting in his capture and the seizure of his weaponry. At least three of the firearms were reported stolen.

‘Our Troopers have once again shown their dedication, apprehending this dangerous individual and securing our neighborhoods from harm,’ said James M. Manni, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police. ‘This sentence is a clear message that firearm offenses will be met with severe consequences.’

James M. Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge ATF Boston Field Division, emphasized the importance of collaboration in keeping firearms out of criminals’ hands. ‘This sentencing ensures our communities are safer and sends a strong message about the consequences of firearm offenses,’ he said.

Thompson was sentenced to 96 months of incarceration followed by two years of federal supervised release. The case was prosecuted as part of the joint Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, which aims to reduce violent crime by focusing enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partnering with local prevention programs.
