Carjacking Crime Wave Hits Detroit: 3 Men Sentenced to Prison for Robbing Lyft Driver.
DETROIT – In a shocking display of brazen violence, three Detroit men, Marquel Bazemore, 20, Jesse Evans, 21, and Joseph Shade-Hubbard, 21, have been sentenced to federal prison for their role in the carjacking of a Lyft driver.
According to court documents, on August 9, 2019, the defendants ordered a Lyft ride through the Lyft mobile application. The victim, a Lyft driver, picked them up in a Cadillac Escalade from the area of 8 Mile and 75 in the city of Detroit.
As the victim attempted to drop the defendants off, Bazemore and Shade-Hubbard exited the vehicle and began punching the victim. Evans, who was in the front seat, pulled out a firearm and demanded that the victim hand over his valuables.
The victim was forced to give up his wallet, credit cards, and money. Bazemore and Shade-Hubbard then went through the victim’s pockets and took the stolen items. This vicious carjacking left the victim shaken and robbed of his personal belongings.
United States District Judge Nancy Edmunds sentenced Bazemore to 96 months in federal prison, Evans to 114 months in federal prison, and Shade-Hubbard to 120 months in federal prison. This sentencing marks a significant victory for the victim and a warning to other would-be carjackers.
The case was investigated by special agents of the FBI and is being prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney Jeanine Brunson. The FBI’s Detroit Division was instrumental in bringing these violent offenders to justice.
This carjacking incident highlights the ongoing struggles with crime in Detroit. It is a stark reminder that crime can happen anywhere, and the public must remain vigilant.
