More than 1,000 pounds of liquid methamphetamine were hauled into Kansas City, Kan., hidden in the gas tank of a semi-trailer truck, federal prosecutors say. The high-stakes smuggling operation ended in arrest Friday night when authorities intercepted three Mexican nationals as they pumped the illicit cargo into five-gallon buckets.
Heraclio Estrella-Montero, 30, Yoan Alejandro Castillo-Zamora, 30, and Fernando Chavez-Rodriquez, 40, all of Mexico, made their initial court appearance in Topeka on a single count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $10 million if they are convicted.
According to court documents, the men were apprehended around 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 13 in Kansas City, Kan., moments after they began transferring the liquid meth from the truck’s fuel system. Investigators believe the method was designed to evade standard drug interdiction tactics used at border checkpoints and weigh stations.
The operation was reportedly sophisticated—liquid methamphetamine disguised as fuel inside the vehicle’s gas tank would not trigger typical detection methods. But law enforcement, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration and supported by the Kansas City DEA Special Response Team and local police, intercepted the transfer before it was completed.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Hough is prosecuting the case, which remains under active investigation. Authorities have not yet disclosed the intended distribution network or how far the operation may extend beyond the three defendants.
In all cases, defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The indictments contain allegations of criminal conduct but not convictions. Federal officials warn that liquid meth smuggling poses both a public safety and law enforcement challenge due to its volatility and concealment methods.
