BISMARCK
Ryan Maurice Thunderhawk, 24, of Cannonball, N.D., was sentenced to serve six years in prison for assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The sentence was handed down on January 20, 2015, by U.S. District Judge Daniel L. Hovland.
According to court documents, Thunderhawk assaulted an adult female with the intent to do bodily harm, and which resulted in serious bodily injury on July 6, 2014. At the time of the incident, Thunderhawk was in a relationship with the female victim, which occurred on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Gary Delorme prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Standing Rock Agency.
Thunderhawk was also ordered to serve three years supervised release and pay a $200 special assessment to the Crime Victims Fund.
The case against Thunderhawk highlights the ongoing issue of domestic violence on Indian reservations. According to the National Institute of Justice, intimate partner violence is a significant problem on reservations, with rates of victimization often being higher than in the general population.
The investigation into Thunderhawk’s case was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Standing Rock Agency. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gary Delorme brought the case to trial, securing a six-year sentence for the defendant.
