A 22-year-old federal inmate at FCI Schuylkill in Pennsylvania has been charged with possession of a weapon, according to a federal indictment.
Tiago Bettencourt, a 22-year-old inmate at FCI Schuylkill, was indicted by a federal grand jury on the charge of possession of a weapon, announced the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
The indictment alleges that on February 27, 2026, Bettencourt possessed a prison-made weapon, approximately a nine-inch sharpened piece of plexi-glass with a cloth handle, commonly referred to as a ‘shank.’
The Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Special Investigative Services of the Federal Bureau of Prisons investigated the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Luisa Honora Berti is prosecuting the case.
The maximum penalty under federal law for this offense is up to five years’ imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.
A sentence following the finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
