A Danville, Virginia man has been caught red-handed in a scheme to file false tax returns, netting his clients more than $250,000 in refunds they were not entitled to.
Timothy Harris, 49, owned and operated TNA Tax Services and TNT Tax Services, which were located in Danville and Rocky Mount.
Harris admitted that he used these businesses to prepare false tax returns for clients that claimed bogus business losses in order to seek refunds to which his clients were not entitled.
Despite having his Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN) revoked by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in December 2012, Harris continued to file tax returns using another person’s EFIN.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) took swift action against Harris, and he is now facing the music for his crimes.
Harris pleaded guilty to aiding in the preparation of a false tax return, and he is set to be sentenced on October 24.
He faces a statutory maximum sentence of three years in prison, a term of supervised release, restitution, and monetary penalties.
