HYANNIS, MA – Timothy Lee Galvin, 31, of Hyannis is facing a lengthy federal prison sentence after being indicted this week for illegally possessing ammunition, despite a lengthy criminal record. The indictment, handed down by a federal grand jury in Boston, alleges Galvin was found with a significant cache of rounds, making him a danger to the public.
According to charging documents, on or around June 2nd, authorities discovered Galvin in possession of three rounds of 9mm ammunition, eleven rounds of .45 caliber ammunition, and a substantial 47 rounds of 9mm ammunition – all while already prohibited from owning firearms or ammunition due to three prior convictions related to drug distribution. This isn’t a first-time offender; Galvin’s history makes him a repeat player in the criminal justice system.
The feds aren’t messing around. The charge of being a felon in possession of ammunition carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years behind bars, and could land Galvin in prison for life. On top of that, he’s looking at five years of supervised release after serving his time, and a hefty $250,000 fine. A federal district court judge will ultimately determine the sentence, guided by U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.
The case was announced jointly by Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua S. Levy, James M. Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Boston Field Division, and Barnstable County District Attorney Michael D. O’Keefe. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin A. Tolkoff of the Organized Crime & Gang Unit is leading the prosecution, signaling the seriousness with which federal authorities are treating this case.
Federal officials are framing this case as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a nationwide initiative designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering cooperation between law enforcement and local communities. The program focuses on building trust, supporting community organizations, and strategically targeting enforcement efforts. Whether these programs translate into real change on the streets remains to be seen.
It’s important to remember that the charges are allegations at this point. Galvin is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. However, the evidence presented thus far paints a concerning picture, and the potential consequences for Galvin are severe. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it progresses through the federal court system.
