Doctor Faces 15-Year Minimum Sentence for Gun Charge
A Jacksonville man has pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, making him an Armed Career Criminal. Timothy Tijwan Doctor, 42, could face a minimum of 15 years and up to life in prison.
On August 11, 2018, multiple officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at a residence in Jacksonville. A crowd of individuals was engaging in a confrontation in front of the residence. As officers separated the individuals, they identified Doctor as having a firearm.
Officer removed a Ruger 9mm pistol from his waistband. The pistol was loaded with a round in the chamber and 12 rounds in the magazine. At the time, Doctor had numerous prior felony convictions, making him prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Frein is prosecuting the case.
Doctor’s guilty plea is part of the “Project Safe Neighborhoods” Program (PSN), a nationwide crime reduction strategy aimed at decreasing violent crime in communities. U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez coordinates PSN efforts in cooperation with various federal, state, and local law enforcement officials.
Under the PSN program, law enforcement agencies and prosecutors work together to investigate and prosecute crimes, as well as implement prevention and reentry efforts to reduce recidivism rates.
Doctor’s sentencing date has not been set yet. He is facing a minimum of 15 years and up to life in prison due to his Armed Career Criminal status.
