Tohn Robinson, 36, known as “Tizzy,” is staring down a federal indictment tied to fentanyl distribution that caused serious bodily injury and illegal gun possession in Pittsburgh. The indictment, returned January 16 and unsealed yesterday, charges the convicted felon with four counts under federal narcotics and firearms statutes, marking the latest blow in a regional crackdown on deadly drug traffickers.
On August 22 and 23, 2016, Robinson allegedly distributed and possessed fentanyl with intent to distribute — a Schedule II controlled substance — directly resulting in serious bodily injury to users. Then, on August 29, 2016, he is accused of possessing additional quantities of fentanyl and heroin, again with intent to distribute. Each act fed into the opioid crisis tearing through Pennsylvania neighborhoods.
Compounding the drug charges, Robinson is accused of possessing a firearm and ammunition on or about April 3, 2016. As a convicted felon, he is strictly barred under federal law from owning or possessing any firearm or ammunition. That single act now carries a potential 10-year prison sentence, a $250,000 fine, or both.
The fentanyl-related counts are far more severe. Federal law mandates a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison, up to life, for drug distribution resulting in serious bodily injury. Fines can reach $1,000,000. Prosecutors are pushing for maximum consequences, citing the lethality and widespread harm of fentanyl-laced street drugs.
Assistant United States Attorney Caitlin A. Loughran is leading the prosecution. The case was built through a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Penn Hills Police Department, and Monroeville Police Department — a collaboration underscoring the regional threat posed by Robinson’s alleged actions.
An indictment is not a conviction. Tohn Robinson, aka “Tizzy,” remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But the charges paint a damning picture of a man allegedly trafficking poison and packing heat in Pittsburgh’s streets. Sentencing, if convicted, will hinge on the severity of the crimes and his prior criminal record under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
