Toadlena Man Accused of Decades of Abuse

ALBUQUERQUE – Garrith Bitsilly, 32, of Toadlena, New Mexico, made his first federal court appearance yesterday facing sickening charges of aggravated sexual abuse and abusive sexual contact in Indian Country. The allegations detail a pattern of predatory behavior stretching back over nearly a decade.

According to a criminal complaint unsealed yesterday, Bitsilly allegedly subjected a young victim, who was less than 12 years old at the time, to repeated acts of sexual abuse over a seven-month period in 2014. The details are disturbing, painting a picture of a calculated betrayal of trust. The victim was reportedly staying with Bitsilly while her mother served her country, deployed to Afghanistan with the military – a particularly cruel twist to the alleged crimes.

Bitsilly, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, exploited the vulnerable situation, allegedly preying upon a child who was already separated from her mother and reliant on his care. The abuse allegedly occurred within Bitsilly’s home in San Juan County, transforming a supposed safe haven into a site of unimaginable trauma.
