Tobacco Tax Fraud Lands CT Man in Hot Water

BOSTON – A West Hartford, Conn. man has been brought to justice in connection with evading taxes on the sale of tobacco products.

Sukhdev Singh, 63, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Springfield today to one count of conspiracy, three counts of wire fraud and one count of money laundering.

According to prosecutors, Singh and his co-conspirators worked together to evade payment of tobacco excise tax by a wholesale business in Berlin, Conn. to the State of Connecticut between 2008 and 2012.

The scheme involved using a ‘no-tax’ computer and a ‘tax’ computer to sell smokeless tobacco and cigars to convenience stores and gas stations, before filing false tobacco tax returns with Connecticut tax authorities.

The charges carry significant penalties, including up to five years in prison for conspiracy, up to 20 years for wire fraud, and up to 10 years for money laundering. Singh also faces a fine of $250,000 for each charge.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation, and Homeland Security Investigations all contributed to the case, which is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alex J. Grant.

The sentencing hearing for Singh has not yet been scheduled, but it’s expected to be a significant moment in the case. As the investigation continues, it’s clear that Singh and his co-conspirators will face severe consequences for their actions.

As the Grimy Times continues to investigate, it’s clear that this case is just the tip of the iceberg in a larger issue of tax evasion and corruption.
