BODY:
A chilling case of human trafficking has come to a close in the Southern District of Texas. Tomas Quino Canil, a 38-year-old Guatemalan national, has pleaded guilty to his role in a deadly alien smuggling operation that claimed the lives of over 50 people, including unaccompanied children, in 2021.
The tragic event occurred when a tractor-trailer packed with at least 160 illegal aliens crashed in Chiapas, Mexico, resulting in the deaths of dozens and injuring over 100 more. Quino Canil, along with five other co-conspirators, was charged in connection with the conspiracy to smuggle and transport illegal aliens from Guatemala into the United States.
According to court documents, Quino Canil and his co-conspirators exploited vulnerable individuals, packing them into a trailer like cargo, all for a hefty profit. The group’s callous disregard for human life and immigration laws led to one of the deadliest human smuggling tragedies in recent memory.
Quino Canil’s guilty plea marks the culmination of a long and complex investigation, with the assistance of domestic and international law enforcement partners. The case serves as a stark reminder of the extreme dangers and devastating consequences caused by those who treat human lives as mere commodities.
As U.S. Attorney Aaron Reitz noted, “These criminals packed more than 150 illegal aliens into a trailer like they were cargo. Fifty people then died at the hands of these foreign criminals. My office will continue hunting down anyone who profits from this trade in human suffering, no matter where they hide or how long it takes to bring them to American justice.”
The outcome of this case is a testament to the dedication and expertise of law enforcement agencies, who worked tirelessly to bring Quino Canil and his co-conspirators to justice. The guilty plea is a significant step towards holding accountable those responsible for this heinous crime and protecting the most vulnerable from exploitation.
