Crack Cocaine Dealer Sentenced to 5 Years in Federal Prison for Threats Against Police
A 27-year-old man from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for distributing crack cocaine and making threatening remarks towards a police officer. Tony Doolin was sentenced on April 12, 2017, by United States District Court Judge Linda R. Reade.
Doolin pleaded guilty on December 29, 2016, to distributing 28 grams or more of crack cocaine. The defendant admitted to selling crack cocaine to an undercover police officer in May 2016 and on multiple occasions thereafter. At the time of sentencing, Doolin confessed to selling a total of over 72 grams of crack cocaine.
Just two days after his initial sale to the undercover officer, Doolin was pulled over for a traffic infraction by a Marion police officer. During the traffic stop, Doolin used his cell phone to record and transmit a ‘Facebook Live’ video of the incident. As the officer was walking back to the squad car, Doolin pulled out a handgun and directed a stream of profanity towards the police officer, who was described as ‘threatening’ and ‘disrespectful’ by the court.
Doolin was sentenced to 60 months’ imprisonment, with a special assessment of $100 imposed. He must also serve a four-year term of supervised release after his prison term. There is no parole in the federal system. The defendant is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Justin Lightfoot and investigated by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Task Force, which consisted of the DEA, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the Marion Police Department, the Iowa City Police Department, and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement.
