ROCHESTER, NEW YORK – A chilling threat to take a life in the justice system has met its fate as Tony Ivey, 53, of Rochester, has been sentenced to 20 months behind bars for threatening to murder an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) with a firearm.
United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian of the Northern District of New York announced the sentence, noting that Ivey’s actions were handled by his office during the prosecution process.
The sinister incident took place on June 14, 2016, when Ivey called the Rochester Branch Office of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York. He threatened to assassinate an AUSA after being informed that he could not directly assist with the complaint in question. The Assistant U.S. Attorney had attempted to refer Ivey to another agency for help.
Chief United States District Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr., of the Western District of New York, imposed additional punishment: a 3-year term of supervised release following his prison sentence.
The investigation into Ivey’s crime was conducted by the United States Marshals Service for the Western District of New York. Assistant U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Brown of the Northern District of New York led the prosecution.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those in the legal profession and underscores the serious consequences when individuals cross the line into violence against justice workers.
