Tony Deshawn Slater, Distribution of Cocaine, Georgia 2023

STATESBORO, GA – Tony Deshawn Slater, 52, of Claxton, Georgia, will spend the next two decades behind bars after being sentenced for his role in a large-scale cocaine trafficking operation. Slater received 240 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to Distribution of Cocaine, a sentence handed down by U.S. District Court Chief Judge J. Randal Hall. He was also fined $2,500 and will face three years of supervised release after serving his time; there is no parole in the federal system.

The sentencing of Slater is a direct result of “Operation Carpet Ride,” a sprawling investigation that began in January 2016 and culminated in a November 2022 indictment naming 32 defendants. The operation uncovered a drug network spanning Bulloch, Burke, Candler, Effingham, Evans, Liberty, Richmond and Tattnall counties. Authorities allege the conspiracy funneled massive quantities of cocaine, methamphetamine, and other illicit drugs from Mexico and the Caribbean into the Southern District of Georgia.

This isn’t Slater’s first brush with the law. Records show he’s a repeat offender, with multiple prior convictions for distributing and possessing cocaine and other controlled substances. The investigation revealed Slater wasn’t just moving product; he also possessed firearms and maintained a location specifically for drug distribution – a clear indication of his commitment to the criminal enterprise. Federal prosecutors successfully argued his history and continued involvement warranted a substantial prison term.

U.S. Attorney Jill E. Steinberg emphasized the collaborative effort that brought Slater and others in the network to justice. “We’re gratified at the number of law enforcement agencies from such a large geographic area coordinating their efforts to identify and disrupt this major drug distribution network,” Steinberg stated. “Together we will continue to hold accountable those who endanger our communities by distributing illegal drugs.” Roughly half of the 32 defendants in Operation Carpet Ride have already pleaded guilty and been sentenced, while the remaining individuals await their day in court.

The case was spearheaded by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF), a multi-agency approach focused on dismantling high-level criminal organizations. A veritable army of law enforcement agencies contributed to the investigation, including the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the FBI, ATF, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security Investigations, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and numerous local sheriff’s offices and police departments from Georgia and Puerto Rico.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Frank M. Pennington II and OCDETF Coordinator Marcela C. Mateo prosecuted the case for the United States. The sentencing of Slater serves as a warning: the feds are watching, and those who profit from poisoning communities will face serious consequences. The remaining defendants in Operation Carpet Ride can expect similar scrutiny as the investigation continues to unfold.
