Topeka Man Pleads Guilty to Carjacking
A brazen carjacking in Topeka, Kansas, has ended with a guilty plea from the perpetrator. Shaun Lee Kendall, 29, of Topeka, pleaded guilty to one count of carjacking in federal court on Monday.
According to the prosecution, Kendall and a co-defendant threatened a driver with violence in order to steal a 1999 Dodge Dakota truck on January 29, 2014. The plea agreement reveals Kendall’s involvement in the theft.
Kendall faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000. Sentencing is set for October 27.
The Topeka Police Department, the FBI, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jared Maag were commended by U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom for their work on the case. The co-defendant, Michael Richard Wilkins, is still awaiting trial.
The crime occurred on a cold winter morning in 2014, leaving the victim shaken and without a vehicle. The guilty plea brings a sense of closure to the victim and the community.
Kendall’s guilty plea serves as a reminder of the severity of carjacking and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to combat such crimes.
