Sioux Falls Man Sentenced for Unlawful Taking of Migratory Birds and Lacey Act Violations
A 34-year-old man from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has been sentenced for his role in the unlawful taking of migratory birds. Travis Vacek, a resident of Sioux Falls, was charged with Unlawful Taking of Migratory Birds and Lacey Act Violations.
On November 24, 2012, Vacek and a group of friends, known as ‘Team Those Guys,’ hunted geese in Miner County, South Dakota. During the hunt, Vacek used an electronic device to kill 18 geese, in direct violation of federal law.
Vacek admitted to knowing it was illegal to use the device during this time of year. The geese were then transported to various locations, also in violation of federal law.
The investigation into Vacek’s actions was conducted by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuted the case.
Vacek was sentenced on July 15, 2013, by U.S. Magistrate Judge John E. Simko. He received 1 year of probation, a $1,350 restitution order, a $200 fine, and a $25 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Vacek’s hunting privileges were also revoked for 1 year.
This case highlights the importance of following federal laws and regulations related to hunting and the environment. Vacek’s actions not only harmed the environment but also put himself and others at risk.
Vacek’s guilty plea and subsequent sentencing serve as a reminder of the consequences of breaking the law.
