MIAMI – A gritty trio from the Treasure Coast recently admitted to a series of brazen robberies targeting U.S. Postal Service (USPS) letter carriers, officials reported.
On June 12 and 14, Jamal Travon Brown Weathers, 23, and Jalen Dennis Elliott, 19, both of Fort Pierce, Florida, pleaded guilty in federal court for their roles in the Hobbs Act robberies. Bernard Jerome Davis III, 20, also of Port St. Lucie, followed suit on June 18, facing a laundry list of charges including armed property robbery and brandishing a firearm during a violent crime.
The trio’s crimes spanned from November 2022 to October 2023, with at least six USPS letter carriers falling victim in counties across Florida. The modus operandi was always the same: confront postal workers at their mailboxes, demand the key to their uniforms, and sometimes brandish firearms to ensure compliance.
The most chilling incident occurred on November 19, 2022, when Brown Weathers confronted a letter carrier in Port St. Lucie, demanding her keys at gunpoint before making his escape in a car driven by Davis. A Postal arrow key is a valuable piece of property authorized solely for USPS use, allowing employees to access mailboxes and carry out their duties.
On May 12, 2023, Brown Weathers and Davis struck again in the Middle District of Florida, robbing two letter carriers at gunpoint within hours. The same month, a letter carrier in Fort Pierce narrowly escaped a robbery attempt when a white Pontiac Grand Prix followed her close behind, its passenger brandishing a black semi-automatic firearm.
The spree culminated on October 21, 2023, when Davis robbed another letter carrier at gunpoint in Miami Beach. The brazen nature of these attacks has left the USPS and law enforcement agencies vowing to bring the men to justice and ensure the safety of postal workers nationwide.
