New Orleans Woman Charged with Conspiracy to Steal Housing Funds
In a shocking turn of events, Trenise DeBoue Murphy, a 52-year-old woman from New Orleans, has been charged with conspiracy to steal housing funds from the Jefferson Parish Housing Authority. According to the Bill of Information, Murphy submitted an application to receive housing assistance through the Housing Choice Voucher Program, listing her family composition as herself, her son, and her daughter, but omitting her husband, who owned the residence they lived in.
As a result of her misrepresentation, the Jefferson Parish Housing Authority provided housing assistance on behalf of Murphy between September 2003 and September 2012 in the amount of approximately $68,593. This staggering sum is the result of yearly recertification paperwork filed by Murphy, which concealed the fact that her ‘landlord’ was actually her husband.
Trenise DeBoue Murphy is facing a one-count Bill of Information with conspiracy to commit theft of government funds. If convicted, she faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 5 years, followed by up to 3 years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite reiterated that the Bill of Information is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Polite praised the work of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development – Office of the Inspector General in investigating this matter.
Assistant United States Attorney Jordan Ginsberg is in charge of the prosecution. The case against Murphy is a stark reminder of the importance of honesty and transparency in government programs.
