Newport News Man Sentenced to Prison for Straw Purchasing a Firearm

A Newport News man was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison for straw purchasing a firearm, according to a recent court ruling.

Treyshard Jackson-Cooper, 25, was found guilty of purchasing a Glock, Model 30, semi-automatic pistol for an individual from a Maryland Bike Crew in October 2018.

Jackson-Cooper visited Superior Pawn, a licensed dealer of firearms, located in Hampton, where he completed an ATF Form 4473 and answered question 11(a) in the affirmative, claiming to be the actual transferee/buyer of the firearm.

However, he later admitted to knowing he was not the actual buyer at the time of the transaction.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime by targeting the most pressing issues in the community and developing comprehensive solutions.

U.S. Attorney G. Zachary Terwilliger and Ashan M. Benedict, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) Washington Field Division, announced the sentencing after Senior U.S. District Judge Rebecca Beach Smith handed down the 1.5-year sentence.

Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristen S. Taylor prosecuted the case.
