Treyton Mims, a 21-year-old from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been sentenced to five years’ probation after being found guilty of possessing a firearm as a drug user.
On September 22, 2020, Mims was stopped by police during a traffic stop, where they discovered a 9mm firearm in his possession. Mims also admitted to using marijuana.
The case against Mims was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN is an evidence-based program that works with a broad spectrum of stakeholders to identify and address the most pressing violent crime problems in the community.
Mims was sentenced by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams on March 1, 2021. His sentence includes five years’ probation.
This case is also part of Project Guardian, the Department of Justice’s initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws. Project Guardian enhances coordination between federal, state, local, and tribal authorities in investigating and prosecuting gun crimes.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Lisa C. Williams and investigated by the Marion Police Department.
