Trigo’s Toxic Trade: Middletown Man Accused of Selling Poisonous Supplements

A 75-year-old Middletown man has been charged with manufacturing and selling adulterated dietary supplements, putting the health of thousands at risk, according to federal authorities.

Robert J. Trigo, owner of NatureMost of New England, Inc., a business based in Middletown, was arrested on September 6, 2019, after a federal grand jury indicted him on three counts of introducing adulterated dietary supplements into interstate commerce.

Trigo allegedly sold the poisonous supplements to wholesalers, distributors, and retailers, as well as to individual consumers throughout the U.S. and several foreign countries. The supplements were not prepared, packed, or held in accordance with current good manufacturing practice regulations.

As alleged in the indictment, Trigo informed the FDA in 2014 that NatureMost had ceased production and distribution of all products, but he never contacted the FDA about resuming operations. In 2017, Trigo and NatureMost fraudulently sold the adulterated supplements.

Trigo faces a maximum term of imprisonment of three years and a fine of up to $250,000 on each count, while NatureMost faces a fine of up to $500,000 on each count. U.S. Attorney Durham stressed that an indictment is not evidence of guilt, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

This matter is being investigated by the Food and Drug Administration, Office of Criminal Investigations. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Neeraj N. Patel.

Trigo surrendered to law enforcement on the morning of his arrest and was released on a $250,000 bond after appearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert M. Spector in New Haven.
